Elon Musk’s Push to Build His Own Network 10 August 2026

Elon Musk has been making clear moves toward creating a network of his own, not just relying on partnerships with mobile carriers like T-Mobile or AT&T.
Spectrum acquisition and Starlink Mobile
In September 2025, SpaceX finalized a deal with EchoStar (parent of Dish Network) to buy $17 billion in wireless spectrum. This is widely seen as a major step toward building a Starlink Mobile network — a direct-to-consumer 5G service that could deliver high-bandwidth connectivity, including video streaming, from satellites to phones. Musk has said the goal is to move beyond emergency text services to full mobile network capabilities, with voice calls and video streaming in the near future.
Vertical integration strategy
Analysts note that Musk is following a long-standing playbook of controlling the customer relationship — from Tesla’s direct-to-consumer car sales to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet. By owning the network, he aims to eliminate middlemen and capture higher-margin revenue streams.
